Different Types of Newspapers

Tabloid: A tabloid is a newspaper that is taken less serious and majority of the information is gossip and minipulated stories, but are still believed by the audience. Tabloid newspapers normally include alot of sport news and celebrity news, which is not largely covered by broadsheet newspapers e.g. The Times & The Independent.

Broadsheet: A broadsheet newspaper is looked at as more of a safisticated newspaper that only upper class people would read. In terms of information, broadsheet newspapers articles are in much more depth and more believible because of less exaggeration unlike the tabloid newspapers.

Researching local newspapers

We have chose 3 local newspapers to do our research on and they are listed below;

  1. Express & Star
  2. Birmingham Post
  3. Shropshire Star
When researching these local newspapers we will be looking at things like;
  • The audiences of the newspapers/The intended readers/Who will be reading it?
  • The history and background
  • Links within community
  • Rivals/Competition
  • Awards
  • Look at their first two pages/Contents of the pages/Why they have used that specific content/The relevance of the content to the local readers

A2 Assignment Brief

One problem that we have lately encountered is with the brief and what we were asked to do. firstly we started doing a 2 page spread of a newspaper on the story of "the world ending 2012", but then after showing the teacher we found out the brief was asking for a "local" 2 page spread of a newspaper and on real local news from the area of our choice that we done research on.

We have already planned the newspaper out, in terms of design and layout, but that might need to change when we take a look at a local newspaper and the layout and design principles they take into consideration and apply relevant things to our work.
